"QUE SERA! CELEBRATING DORIS DAY"
Local vocalist Kristi King presented her “Que Sera!
Celebrating Doris Day” show to enthusiastic audiences at PS Underground
on May 6 and 7. Divided into three acts in keeping with the club’s
gourmet dinner service, Kristi related three events that changed the
course of Day’s career: first, a car accident when she was 16,
cancelling the opportunity of a dancing job in Hollywood (she turned to
singing); second, getting the part of the bitter torch singer Ruth
Etting in “Love Me or Leave Me” opposite James Cagney. She proved she
could act and move on from musicals; and third, appearing in the
ultra-popular “Pillow Talk” with Rock Hudson, in which she demonstrated
a flare for comedy. She became the highest box office draw in Hollywood
history. In each act, Kristi performs five of Day’s songs, seeming to be
channeling the iconic singer. Between songs she tells stories from Day’s
career, some humorous and some heart-breaking. She ends the show
expessing the actress-singer’s optimistic philosophy – whatever will
be, will be, make the most of it.
